In their summary of the positives, USA Today refers to the "Research Triangle Park" but then only mentions two of the three universities that make up the Triangle.
Ironically, the university they failed to mention - NC State - is the one with a STEM mission, producing the kind of high-tech workforce that Amazon seeks.
No one mentioned rankings (or even brought up the topic of the validity & objectivity of various uncited rankings).
Do you consider NC State to be part of the Research Triangle or not?
Philadelphia too expensive? Try comparing some COLs. Here's the hint, it's not. They pitched probably the most perfect site that meets the want list. Schuylkill Yards.
Going by C-D data (and leaving out Toronto because I couldn't find a comparable figure, and I don't think anyone sees them as a likely choice, to be honest), Philadelphia is around the middle of this pack in terms of COL. (Indy, Nashville, Dallas, Raleigh, Austin, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta are lower)
I can't imagine anyone visiting the DC area with that traffic and saying "yeah, this is where we want to be". It can take 3 hours on the regular to get somewhere that's less than an hour away. And it's only getting worse. Every time we drive through there's another highway being built/was just built confusing the GPS. And you can pay a toll to escape it but it's not feasible to pay that toll on a daily commute (unless you're Jeff Bezos).
Boston, seems like an odd choice but seems to be the front runner...super expensive, super cold, super long winters. Not sure that people are going to Harvard and MIT with the goal of working at Amazon.
I have no skin in the game, won't be working at Amazon and my kids aren't interested in IT as a career but I would say DC area and Boston to be the two strangest choices without overthinking it too much.
Or, gunning for a White House Press Secretary job, maybe?
