From this week's mayor's blog...permits have been issued for the first vertical construction at Fenton.
Quote:
Fenton Vertical Construction Approved
The first building permit for vertical construction at Fenton has been approved! Building 12, which is a 4-story 67,000 square foot mixed use building located on the central community gathering space, includes retail shops on the ground floor with loft office space on the upper floors.
Building permits were approved for Buildings 22 and 24, which will include 357 multifamily units and over 99,351 square feet of retail space. The permit for Building 7, a 4,551 square foot restaurant, was also approved this week. Fenton has submitted 13 other minor permits under review. On Thursday, Columbia Development and Hines held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of vertical building construction, yet another significant milestone for their ongoing construction efforts.
Hines press release and Cary Citizen article on the groundbreaking and related announcements. Arhaus will be opening an 18,000 square foot store in the project, and the retail component is already 73% leased or under LOI at the start of construction. (I'm presuming they mean just for the first phase.) First openings are planned for spring 2022.
I sure hope the Developers and TOC will execute a vision for the curb view from Carytowne Blvd to offer a bit more appeal and drama than just another high retaining wall. Right now, it is butt ugly to drive past.
The renderings I see don't indicate structure so high above street level. I hope it is an engaging "gateway" streetscape and not completely focused on the interior.

"It won't" -- Narrator
Kidding aside, yeah that's been one of my main gripes about this entire project. The vibes from Cary Towne Blvd are lackluster and nothing in the renderings ever seemed to dictate otherwise.

Jennifer Robinson griped that they overlooked the view of the HT roof from the top of the 12 story building...
I will likely never see that.
But, I WILL often see the retaining wall in all its glory.
Then there is "Carolina Yards" across the street. (Jeeze, could they possibly have come up with a more banal title?)
I wonder if it will engage, or also perhaps appear to be an insular, walled, gated enclave?
Of course, most of the Carolina Yards frontage on Cary Towne is going to be a massive parking garage.
