I've seen them in two different areas and stopped to stare. I love the shape of them.
Does anyone know what they are? I want to see what they look like with leaves. I don't think I've ever seen these where we used to live and am curious too if they're more suited to this area.
I have a neighbor who has one planted about 15 feet from their house.
That may be a mistake. Too close.
It is now growing about 4' annually. I think it would grow faster with more water. Dry sunny location, but it looks like it is thriving.
Beautiful tree.

Beautiful tree.
Definitely too close, from what I'm reading just because of the spread. I read that it likes moist but well drained soil which doesn't jive with native red clay so I wonder if amendment would be needed.
A lot of people don't do any research before planting trees and plants and then regret it later. It's not as big of a deal here with a lot of buried cables but planting under power lines was a common mistake where I used to live. I had a nice white dogwood that was massacred every few years by our county tree trimming service because it grew right into the power lines. It looked terrible and stunted on one side.
Those are also easily confused with Bald Cypress since the habit and leaves are nearly the same and both grow in this region. Dawn Redwood has opposite leaf arrangement and Bald Cypress had alternate. There is a very large and nice Dawn Redwood on the side of Cary Town Hall facing Herb Young Community Center as well.
