I just read this article in the TBJ and none of the top hotels in NC are located in Raleigh proper. The #1 hotel is the Umstead in Cary.

Raleigh has made a lot of progress over the last couple of decades in terms of becoming more urban and adding amenities, but a critical piece that is missing in the core of the city is a major luxury hotel. If this city expects to compete for companies like Amazon, then it will need to find ways to address these types of issues which are well known.

I'd love to hear other thoughts on this topic.

Who is going to stay there though? Raleigh isn’t a top tourist destination and we have several suitable, modern, and trendy hotels for business travelers.

There is enough corporate business in the area to justify a luxury hotel. We're not talking about your everyday business traveler. This would be corp execs, attendees for large conferences and conventions, celebrities, and other VIPs when in town.

I feel like the free market would determine whether there's the need for a luxury hotel or not. Unlike a supermarket downtown, it's not something that is essential.

The Umstead is pretty much in Raleigh. It's easily accessible from downtown Raleigh and from RTP.

Downtown Raleigh has some decent hotels and chains. I feel sure that if they felt they could support such a hotel, it would already be there.

North Hills has a fairly new, decent 4-star offering with the Renaissance there, and it's not much less than a room at the Umstead.

This is Raleigh, not NYC.

And they all pretty much stay at the Umstead. And it's not at full capacity most of the time.

If there were more demand for higher end hotels, someone would build one. And it wouldn't take a NY chain to do so either... heck, the Goodnights would.

I'm not a celebrity or a VIP, but I would think a big house with privacy would be more desired than a hotel. Have your trusted staff with you and keep out others.

Cary is basically Raleigh anyways. Much like Santa Monica and West Hollywood and Century City are all Los Angeles. Unlike Charlotte, Raleigh didn't eat the entire county due to the state governments putting a stop to that.
