If it is work that doesn't need a lift, driveway mechanics are usually good and doesn't charge a lot (mostly cost of parts/some labor)

you find them throughout the country by going to an autozone or autoparts and asking the people at the counter if they know a driveway mechanic. Some might even do it themselves

Just wanted to jump in here. I learned recently that the "service advisors" at dealers are on commission. The more stuff they can get you to fix, the more they make. Keep that in mind. I had no idea until recently, thinking that only the actual "sales" people were on commission. Not true. They are all on commission.

I talked to a guy in town (in Michigan) who has his own independent repair shop, who is great, and who used to work as a service advisor at a couple different dealers (one Japanese, one US brand), and he said that there are "incentives" built into the service advisors pay, the more repairs they sell, the more they make. Also a guy at Costco Tire Center used to work as a service advisor for a GM dealer for 20 years, and told me the same thing. The only thing I go to a dealer for is to do a recall (Takata airbag replacement) at no charge.

Good to know there are honest repair shops (WASP) in the Durham area. Thanks for the info.
