I have an option to move this summer to Raleigh or Cary, or stay here in NJ with a promised position as an RN (I graduate with a BSN this May) The job pays $37/hour and it's a new nurse residency program that is a year long. It's a long drive for me but I'm used to that. I really hate where I currently live though.

How is the hiring situation at WakeMed for new grads? h.Would I have a better chance to work here in NJ for RN experience first? I have experience from a nurse externship program and as a patient care ass. in the hospital. It seems like sometimes hospitals prefer new grads and have the residency programs though.

Thank you for any advice.

My son was hired as an RN straight out of school at Rex Hospital a year ago. He had an offer from WakeMed as well. His starting base pay was around 25/hr, but he works a lot of nights and weekends so often makes closer to 35-40/hr. with the shift differential. I would imagine the cost of living is a little higher in NJ, so not sure how the numbers equate.

When I graduated almost three years ago we had a few in my cohort who got new grad positions at Wake Med. I didn't apply to Wake Med but had no trouble getting job offers in this area with my top three choices.

Does this area meet your needs?

Almost no public transit.

Rents rising a lot.

Overcrowded schools.

Unless you just want some experience under your belt, be sure this area fits your needs.

OP is from NJ; they likely have a car and are use to driving.

Rent down here is substantially better than northern NJ. Unless OP is from the backwoods parts of NJ, they'll find rent down here to be cheaper despite the recent increase.

"It's a long drive for me"...what is a long drive ? My wife has driven up to 130 miles round trip during her long nursing career, others commute from the east coast to the west coast for the right nursing opportunity. Regarding your current opportunity...everyone is better off having a current resume with recent work activity to present to a prospective employer. Get some experience, then try Travel Nursing to explore the options for your ideal place to live/work.

How is the hiring situation at WakeMed for new grads? great. pay is not $37/hour.
h.Would I have a better chance to work here in NJ for RN experience first? yes.
after you get your RN you have YOUR choice instead of THEM choosing you.
and, yes....my devious plan is to delay EVEN MORE NJ residents moving here.

If you have a good place where you're able to build experience, stay there.
This area is a non-union right to work for less state.

Non union is disappointing although a few nurses I've met said they don't like the union they are in. However others have told me that the union is why for example a nurse can't be floated to another unit without orientation.

I live in Camden. I have not wanted to name that city because I'm not trying to call it out or bash it. For me, it's not a good place to be. I can't walk outside without a car pulling up on the sidewalk to block my path and a 30 or 50 year old guy asking me if I want a sexual act, or without seeing that or similar happen to someone else. When I visited Raleigh all I know is that I went outside smiling and loving it.
