We just had about 800 linear feet of 6' fence on our property and used a local clayton company (Allstar Fence) and were very happy. The portion facing the road was about 150 ft of 6' PVC Privacy Fence (5 ft solid PVC panels with 1 foot PVC lattice on top) with 2 - 5' wide PVC Gates, rest was all 6' high, black vinyl coated chain link with 2 - 4' wide gates (we also enclosed our utilities within chain link fencing with privacy slats - Propane tanks, AC units, telephone/cable boxes, etc.). This was a hugh job that was done very quickly and thoroughly for just over $12,000. Many posts were dug manually to make sure no underground lines were hit. They also did not ask for any money until the job was completed to our satisfaction and did not attempt to nickel and dime anything or add anything additional into it even though it probably took a bit longer to install then they first anticipated. We would recommend them to others. Not sure we could have really gotten this done for much cheaper, but were thrilled with the end result.

From what you describe, you could have done it yourself for about $4,000-$5000.

For plain wood fencing Seegars wants nearly $20/per linear foot. They came to give us an estimate onsite, told me one figure on my front porch then drove back to the office and called to say "my bad" your estimate is actually $900 higher?

I don't like tactics like that, I was told to expect a quote via email a week ago, it still hasn't arrived? this is the Seegar office in Cary.

230 linear feet of fencing should not cost nearly 4.5K !

I got a quote from a fence company for 437 linear feet, including 4 x 4' gates and 1 x 8' double gate. The fence would be Gothic style wood fencing 4' tall. The quote came out to $14/linear foot. Is this a reasonable estimate for this type of fencing?

I too received a quote from Lowes for 221 linear feet of fencing. They asked for close to 9,000 for PVC and almost 3,000 for wood. Isn't that extremely overpriced or is it just me?

What style of wood fencing is it? How high? That quote seems about right at $13.50/sq ft. I would go with a highly rated local company (Seagers, Harrison, ect) instead of lowes. All Lowes does is higher out sub contractors to do the work.

We did end up putting a wood fence in our old home (older post). When it was three years old, it looked like it needed to be restained and some of the boards were warping. We moved to a new home and had an aluminum fence installed...I was tired of all the money involved in maintaining wood thoughout the years. Now I have two wood decks I'm staining...glad I don't have a wood fence to do the same too.

I'm in Chapel Hill and we recently had a 6 foot privacy fence installed on our heavily wooded lot by Fortress Fencing. They did a great job and were very reasonable on the price.
