My neighbor is a web developer. He just learned that the company he works for is moving its IT department to Malaysia. Is this something commonplace these days?

Hmm..I guess the news we want is wherever we look for it.

https://www.wraltechwire.com/2018/02...-nearly-18000/

The loss of 10,000 jobs nationally doesn't sound so bad compared to a gain of 18,000 in a single state, in a single sector.

Okay. But I hear many people say the triangle IT job market is very robust.
I guess I don't understand the contradiction there.

10,000? Read further:

"All told, in the year since Trump was elected, more than 93,000 jobs have been certified by the Department of Labor as lost to outsourcing or trade competition, slightly higher than the average of about 87,000 in the preceding five years."

When I worked for Mobil Oil in the 70's the company sent me to a postgrad course at NYU so I could join their IT unit.

Now, phony ads are posted to pretend there is nobody here to fill the job. Then comes the visa giving them workers for less.

Gotcha. Manufacturing started a long time go. Skilled labor has been following suit. I've know of CAD work being outsourced to Viet Nam and China. India has been doing IT for a long time. I've heard talk of on-shoring being more popular these days but that would be for manufacturing I suppose since it was the first to go.

Not sure I get where the contradiction is. This was one company (and I'm guessing not one of the biggies or we'd likely have heard about this in the news). In general, this is a pretty good area to be looking for jobs in IT. That doesn't mean every single company is hiring like crazy and no one in IT is ever fired/laid off/outsourced. It does mean that well-trained IT folks with current skills are in a good position to find other jobs without having to relocate if the worst should happen.
