Kelly, what is your source for this Thursday meeting with Battaglia and the Durham GOP? I don't see anything about it on the Durham GOP's website: https://www.durhamgop.com/events

Seems odd to me.
Word of mouth..I will try to find an official announcement.
Why are you so threatened & critical of my speaking out about what I believe in.
Being open minded means defending other's right to voice opinions.
I'm not, really - I specifically said you have the right to do it - I know how the Durham government and likely the majority of citizens feel about the issue, and it amuses me that as a non-resident you are so up in arms that you are posting about a GOP meeting on the issue.
I encourage you to go speak your mind, while the rest of us who live here shrug and get back to life.
Obviously the local elections are limited to Durham, but I see the debate as much bigger than Durham.
Oh definitely the debate is much bigger than Durham in terms of the confederate statues and how to proceed in these times. It's everywhere.
This specific issue about this specific statue is very Durham, including how it came down, the reaction of local officials, how it has been handled since. Seeing/hearing about very few people with strong reactions to it, and none from actual Durham residents, though maybe my one neighbor with the Don't Tread On Me bumper sticker is pissed.
I don't believe for a second that they did not work together to put on trial the weakest cases in order to
use that as a justification to drop charges on the others.
I don't think I'd want to go on public record accusing members of Durham's government of collusion, kelly.
As far as I've read, the DA prepared both cases that got dismissed. When they did, he dropped the other cases because he felt they were a waste of resources.
That is the official story. Naturally, there may be more to it, but without any evidence, I can only make assumptions based on the way the cases that went to trial turned out.
If I took two cases to trial and they didn't result in convictions, I would not keep on going with the three others I had waiting for trial on the same grounds.
It would be a waste of time.
Nobody was murdered here. It was a statue and it wasn't even a statue of an actual person. I cannot see spinning wheels over that.
I do not agree with destroying public property, of course. I would not personally rip down a statue on public property, even if I found it abhorrent.
