Well, we won't have to wait long to find out. But at some point, Beryl is sure to be closed as a through-route.
Yep, that was basically my "prediction" too. My hope is that they'll keep Beryll open while Hillsborough is closed, and visa-versa. It would make sense (and add a lot of traffic to Beryll).

No idea what the long-term plan is, but Beryl is currently open all the way through.

When the project is done, Beryl will have a bridge over Blue Ridge and the connection will be via Pylon Drive (which gets a stoplight at Blue Ridge).

For the duration of construction, I'm really not sure.

I thnk this is the consensus. We know the end-game, but not the path to it. At this point I have to assume they'll keep Beryl open while Hillsboro is closed, and then do 'the switch'.

FWIW: With the new barricades, Beryl is the most bike friendly it's ever been. Getting across that intersection before the closure was like a sadistic game of *******. Now, with no traffic coming from the North side, it's pretty much a lay-up.

(And I figured out that if and when they DO close it, i can turn left and there is a passage through some of the apartments that gets me to Western, so there's a plan when i need it.)

Funny you use the term "spiral," as a good many of NCDOT's ideas involve spiraling "turbine" flyover ramps (especially #2)
https://www.ncdot.gov/projects/i-440...cept-maps.aspx
It was originally part of the current 440 widening project, but as that went over budget the two big interchanges at either end (40/440 and 440/70) got cut out of the scope. Of course, they're the biggest problems, and not going to improve on their own.

Re: parallel routes for bikes, Raleigh's Western BRT plans include a sidepath in this segment. Ligon is also a pretty good alternate under the Beltline.

Interesting that they appear only appear to be building a two track railroad bridge there, since they've always had at least two tracks crossing there, it wasn't that long ago that they had three, the right of way is big enough for four, and it seems somewhat likely that they will have additional trains going through there in the somewhat near for bridges anyway) future.

I know as always money is the issue, but we are constantly doing things like this to ourselves that cost us way more money over the mid and long term, not to mention the issues that are caused by massive delays to the traveling public, which has a cost that is never accounted for.

Very valid point. I wonder though, is it possible they have built it in a way that could be expanded? If the right of way is available, perhaps they have set themselves up to "expand as needed"?

I kind of doubt they are thinking that far ahead (your point!), but it's wishful thinking.

LOL, I had totally forgotten about that. At least I didn't argue against myself this time.
