Hi Folks,
I came across this forum with a google search. Happy to join this useful site. Please share some advice on where to live between fayetteville and durham. Wife works at Fayetteville and I work at Durham. We plan to find a best way to commute between these two cities. We have lived in Chapel Hill/ Durham for the last four years but really have no idea about where to locate now. We prefer that she drives about 30 minutes and I drive about one hour. Please help. job starts in Feb 2007.

Hmmmm....best I can figure, just by looking at a map and taking into account the times of driving you mention, the first place to look would be Southern Raleigh. You can take I-40 to Durham (although traffic will be quite congested) and she can take I-40 to I-95 to Fayetteville.

I have looked at the map at least 50 times and the mapping tools in remax.com. No luck. South raleigh is a bit too far for her to drive (she is not a good driver. )

I've recently worked with a client whose spouse worked at RTP while they worked at Ft. Bragg. They decided on Sanford - the commute to Fayetteville was a little more than 30 minutes, but not more than 45, and the commute to RTP (in your case, Durham) would be between 45 and an hour. That's really the best midpoint.

Oh really? I thought places like Fuquay-Varina were in the middle, but it looks like I am wrong. I will do some research on Sanford. Thanks a lot for the valuable info.

Sanford is definitely your best bet for that commute.
Fayetteville will be a breeze (4 lanes down Hwy. 87).
Durham will depend on where RTP, or further north. Either way, you will head up US 1 North and then exit off, probably at New Hill and cut through Jordan Lake toward Durham.
A significantly more scenic commute with less traffic, than from Fuquay.

Folks, thanks a lot for the valuable info. We actually did try to drive Durham->Sanford->Fayetteville. But it seems that either my wife or I have to drive HWY 421 which passes Downtown Sanford. I am thinking about another possibility: Benson near the intersection between I-40 and I-95. It seems that the commute will be far better than Sanford due to fast speed in the two major highways. I don't know why nobody has raised this possibility before. Any insights?

^ Probably cuz Benson is usually seen as not much more than a pitstop on the interstate? Just a guess.
