There has been some speculation that the Carolina Hurricanes and Oilers have spoken about Nugent-Hopkins and Talbot, with Justin Faulk and Jeff Skinner being discussed on the other side.
(myNHLTR note: this doesn’t mean that it’s RHN and Talbot for Faulk and Skinner, other pieces could have been discussed, those just may be the key pieces)
I could live with this, provided this isn't the ONLY move.
I'm ok with Ward as a 20-game backup goalie if he will sign a one-year contract at, say, $1.5 million (half of last season). Whether the Canes can retain him with such an offer, the free market will dictate. I'd say 50-50.
As for Darling, I remain highly skeptical about his ability to perform. What a gamble to depend on him! Whatever happens with Ward, I hope the Canes obtain a new #1 who can reasonably be expected to play 60+ games with a .915 save percentage, send Darling to Charlotte, and either buy him out or trade him depending on how he performs there.
Ward hasn't been .915 or better since 2012. In fact, he's had only four seasons at .915 or better. As a backup, Darling had three straight seasons at .915 or better... prior to his disaster here.

As we critique goalkeepers, I wonder...
Is there a stat somewhere on how many open breakaways a goalie faces?
We sure do give up a lot more of them than we get, and when you see a goalie face 5 in a game, it gets harder to criticize their save percentages...
I think Darling will rebound, but not in Carolina. Move him back to Chicago and go with Camx2.
The Hurricanes need to address their goaltenders going forward. The future should not involve Cam Ward. Ward's tenure with the Hurricanes is up. He needs to move on.
Given the Trotz announcement today, the Caps might have more money to spend from a P&L perspective, although the cap remains a factor. Anyway, Philly and some other teams looking for help in goal will be contending for Grubauer if the Caps let him leave. But the compensation would not be trivial if the Caps extend him a QO.
The return on Skinner is going to have a lot of people shaking their heads in disbelief.
And hoping Svechnikov comes in and starts scoring 30 goals right away, is unrealistic.
None of this will matter if they can't find a goalie. A decent goalie.
