It’s because people are walking around in awe looking up at the train and staring at the different things etc. It’s not like a normal grocery store where people are bored just get it get what they want and leave. It’s more like an amusement park of grocery stores. Haha

I find it hard after ALL THIS HYPE that the Wegman's organization cut any corners on "layout" and "aisle width".

I was there the same time as you, Repatriot. It was stupid crowded compared to any grocery store I go to late Sunday afternoon.

They were sold out/very low on several "grocery store" items. Like, there were fewer than 50 bananas for 80+ sqft of display.

Funny thing is - they were completely sold out of Texas Pete, but had ample Frank's. That indicates a more Southern crowd (today at least) than thirsting transplant.

This is so funny to me because I was just thinking the other day I never see empty fruit displays at any supermarket. I've seen empty potato, onions and things like that (in fact I got 2 of the last 5 potatoes today at the store) but I've never seen an empty banana or apple display.

Yeah the layout is perfectly fine and pretty normal, the hold ups keep happening from people stopping to take pictures and exclaim at certain items, talk to other people. Folks are still pretty excited about it. The prices are the cheapest of any full grocer on Wake Forest Rd and 2nd cheapest after Walmart and it's the closest grocery store to my house, so I'll continue to use it as my regular store despite the crowds. I probably wouldn't drive 20+ mins out of my way and past other stores though. Or maybe I would. When Kroger was open on Six Forks @ Wake Forest I drove from Trinity @ Edwards Mill to shop there.

Just out of curiosity, what would selling out of Tabasco or Crystal tell you?:

Well...our local HT has had a few empty fruit sections a few times, including no bananas (as in "Yes, We Have No Bananas Today", something an old uncle would sing....). I consider bananas to be a staple. They've been out of other fruits on occasion as well. To be fair this may have been during hurricane times.

We don't shop at HT much, go there more for convenience, taking a walk, or specialty items. Their Almond Milk is well-priced at $2.49 which is cheaper than FL where we usually shop, and Wegman's had theirs at $1.50 or something like that (haven't tasted it yet).

But on the two Wegman's visits bananas, while thankfully at the same $0.39/lb price as FL, they were ripe to the point of being good for only a day or two, making it impractical to get a week's worth. That may be because we went in the evening both times and the greener ones were already picked through. Good that Wegmans and FL sell Costa Rican or other preferred varieties whereas HT always has Guatemalan ones.

Interestingly, recently HT lowered their banana prices from $0.69 or $0.59 to $0.49 or $0.39.

We can agree to disagree about the ergonomics of Wegmans' perimeter layout and traffic lanes. It's to me more akin to Greenwich Village whereas the rest of the store is grid-like akin to Upper Manhattan.

Another thing, somewhat related, on my FB feed the past few days was mention about a Strickland Rd Lowes starting something called a Daily Deli, inviting people to go and sample and give feedback. Could be that this is in response to the Wegmans opening. We don't shop there, I doubt we have ever been there, but will look to check it out soon.

Clearly, you've never been to the Costco in Apex on any given weekend day. We went to Wegmans on Friday (pretty cool, very crowded, and lot's of great cheese and other stuff), but it was like pre-season for Costco regarding the crowds (and don't get me wrong, it was VERY crowded).

I'm a recent convert to Aldi for a lot of stuff. Have been taste testing things with my kids and if it gets a thumbs up, we're good. Breaded chicken tenders, DS prefers Aldi brand to national brand. Almond milk is $1.72 I think. Kids like the Chewy Chips Ahoy equivalent, DS likes their salsa. Frozen riced cauliflower....fine by me. I'm lucky that there's an Aldi and a neighborhood market near my house and near each other. Looking forward to Lidl opening over here as well. Got most of my weekly shopping done at Aldi yesterday for a family of 4 for $78.

The layout is likely to make you "see everything" - that's generally why you get the Greenwich Village design. Target has done the same thing at many stores, including Beaver Creek in Apex, I think they rocked their last quarter earning and it's no surprise. Change the layout, change the lighting, change the music - marketing 101. You may want to get in and out, but the store wants you to linger and think "hmmm that looks good".

Aldi has een a pleasant surprise. My wife slipped in a few things from there months ago to get me over the 'don't like Aldi' hump and I've been pleased. Great brioche buns and flavored breads. Their snacks are good too. I love it when you come home with a bag of stuff for under $10.
