The Varsity Lot at NCSU is not adjacent to PNC Arena, Carter-Finley Stadium and the fairgrounds. It is over 3 miles to the south and east. I'm assuming the article is wrong and they mean the same spot they shoot them off during the State Fair.
I think they meant the Varsity (Club) Lot, which is over by Gate G on Trinity Road:
As much as I get it, the show needed to go back to the fairgrounds.
Agreed. It did its job for a few great years on helping drive people to downtown Raleigh that normally wouldn't have stepped foot there after all the work the city did on reworking Fayetteville Street. I'm looking forward to seeing the fireworks at the fairgrounds again.
Rotten greed by downtown businesses overpowered safety moving the show downtown.
Hard to stop. If one tinderbox went up in flames, the others would probably join the incendiary display and a lot of losers might think twice about being protected by NC's lousy building codes.

Not to worry, they are building some tinderboxes right next to the launch site just so they can go up in flames as part of the fireworks show
Here's how we did the Fairgrounds fireworks show without getting into a lot of traffic...from north Raleigh. We drove in up Lake Boone Trail and parked behind the brick office buildings on the left just before getting to Blue Ridge Rd...turn in on Rex View Dr. We walked our folding chairs up towards the Art Museum and found a good spot at the crest of the hill. After the show we could get back to the car and shoot down Lake Boone to get to the Beltline.

I'm sure people will be happy with this decision, but I don't mind one way or the other. Last time I went to see fireworks at the fairgrounds was back in 2005 it took me almost two hours to leave the parking lot.
Never went back!
Could have been worse. When I moved to North Jersey in 1999, there was a July 4th fireworks display at Liberty Park (location of the Statue of Liberty.) First time they ever did one there. Thought about going but took a pass. People were stuck in traffic getting out until 5 AM!
