This sort of thing should be done during the week.

Lunches and happy hours and dinners NEAR businesses.
Interact with your people in their natural habitat.

Driving on the roads during rush hours.
Grocery store shopping.
Middle of the day visits at parks and libraries.

What kinds of things do you like? I would suggest checking out the greenway trail for walking, running or biking, having a drink at a local brewery (ponysaurus in Durham comes to mind based on your location but I’m sure there are options in cary), have an amazing dinner downtown (highly recommend death and taxes or the Stanford) and visit the art museum. Drive around and check out neighborhoods. Go out to jordan lake and go for a swim or hike. Get a massage or do a spa day. Check out the Umstead if budget isn’t a factor.

Instead of telling the OP how they should feel about Cary/Apex/Morrisville, maybe some posters could offer something constructive. Just a thought.
Clearly i was asking a clarifying question, not telling anyone how they should "feel". Describing Car/Apex/Morrisville as generically suburban is hardly a pejorative; its simply a statement of fact. Thanks so much for your input though.

Search for “planning trip” or “relocation trip” keyword. This is a good post: //www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...my-agenda.html

When I visited on my own exploratory weekend over seven years ago, I did a lot of driving so prepare for that if you want to get a good look around.

You mentioned Apex. Apex has become a convenient suburb for those who work in Raleigh or RTP but it is its own town with a cute downtown area. The town has several events through the years, most of them geared towards families, and all the other amenities around town that you would need. (Coming from NYC, though, you may be bored.)

This Saturday, May 5, is PeakFest from 8am-5pm.
Join the Apex Festival Commission for a Peak of Good Living Celebration in Downtown Apex! There will be 5 blocks of arts, crafts, food trucks, live music, entertainment, kid’s rides, and much more! If you are interested in being a vendor, sponsor, have questions, or just want an application, please visit the PeakFest website at www.apexpeakfest.com

Also, here is the community calendar - Events for May 2018 – Think Apex
And, the town's web-site to research some more - https://www.apexnc.org/801/Things-To-Do

If you're interested in checking out downtown Raleigh, the year's first Food Truck Rodeo is happening on Sunday.
