Cancer and fund raising: My 50 yr old brother fell and broke 3 bones. Docs discovered he has multiple myeloma blood cancer. The day he fell was his last day of employment and he is now broke and facing eviction. How do we go about doing a fund raiser for him, are there legalities we need to be aware of, is the money taxable, etc. Friends will submit for GoFundMe, but what else can we do for him. Where do we start?
A gofundme isn’t the same as a fundraiser for a nonprofit with 501 c3 tax status. Those gifts will not be tax deductible and I assume your brother would need to pay taxes for the money received.
You should consult a tax professional, because it looks like the IRS has hit a couple of people with large tax bills counting the money collected as income.
Has he started treatment? I work with a lot of MM patients on clinical trials. Our social workers are great about helping patients fill out paper work to get grants / funding to cover costs and pay bills.
