This whole HQ-split thing is probably happening now because Bezos got caught up in the leak and now has to pick something other than Crystal City to save face with everyone else that's been courting him. Else it pretty much at face value will have been a waste of everyones time (if not already).
Rule #1 in becoming wealthy and rich, try and use as little of your own money as possible.

The extremely wealthy and extremely poor are similar in many ways, they will both try, get and use as many handouts as anyone is willing to give them, make no mistake about.
The split makes sense. They can start in two places, and put more resources to whichever they want. They don't put all the traffic in one place, and they can spread their geographic footprint. In a way this adds more interest to the story than just picking Crystal City, which by itself would be an underwhelming end to all the speculation.
I used to stay in Crystal City when I went to DC because it was easy to get to and you could get a good deal on a nice room. I guess those days are over.
The old saying comes to mind....flush twice, it's a long way to Jersey.
