Just heard through the grapevine that something new is coming -- 7pm, August 1, "That Old North State Radio Hour."

You were most definitely listening to 95.7 The Ride out of Hickory. Still pretty eclectic and an independent station.

Ah, yeah, that makes sense. We caught a bit of that when we were up in Boone recently.

WNCW 92.9 and 90.9 in the mountain area out of Spindale is another great independent station. WNCW | Listener-Powered Radio

95.7 is really a different kind of radio station. One minute, it is bluegrass, the next "rap-crap" type music that I hate - but really a nice variety, and songs you don't hear elsewhere. Who else in the area plays the Squirrel Nut Zippers? I will continue to listen and hope they stay around awhile.

I'm sure they do on WUNC's Music Discovery's stream. I actually like their mix better than That Station (more new music, fewer jam bands, less classic rock — for some reason Steely Dan seems to be a big fave on That Station). But WUNC's Music Discovery doesn't have an OTA broadcast channel (yet?), on the other hand That Station's signal is so weak I usually have to stream it anyway. No live DJs on WUNC's Music Discovery stream, either, and I do like a DJ. I will say that the youthful naiveté of Kristin and Sean sometimes rubs a little thin after awhile on That Station. Overall they come across as very nice people, though. I wish they would play more new music. They play a lot of local area 80s/90s stuff that I enjoy, but seems weird coming from Sean and Kristin who seem like they are probably in their 20s or 30s.

Probably some of the college stations play the Squirrel Nut Zippers, too.

I hope you caught them live last night! I have never heard them played on the radio here, certainly not on any of the mainstream stations. I didn't realize they were even from this area until yesterday. Would be nice to hear them on the radio here considering they are local.

They play a LOT of local music on WUNC's Music stream and play it on the college stations, too, but "That Station" is the first somewhat commercial station — at least since WRDU played AOR and used to play Glass Moon — that I have heard much local music on.

Replies to a few different things:

Kristen is fresh out of college but Sean has been in radio for a minute, he's a veteran (in radio years) to the format.
WUNC does carry WUNC Music on 91.5 HD2 but not on an analog signal.
Almost 15 years ago 100.7 switched from Oldies to a format similar to this (the format is called AAA, Adult Album Alternative). It was the original incarnation of 100.7 The River and was not nearly as eclectic as 95.7 is today, but they did play Squirrel Nut Zippers. It was my first exposure to the band. When Clear Channel blew up 1061RDU for country, they flipped 100.7 The River to classic rock but did not change the name. Later they came to their senses and renamed it 100.7 WRDU but it is not even a little bit like the original RDU.

Yeah, I was thinking of 106.1. I really don't listen to much commercial radio, but y'know another commercial station that does play some local stuff is WCHL in Chapel Hill. They're pretty hyper-local with their talk programming and some of that spills over into music too.
