The town made it clear from the get-go that they were basically going to let Ikea do what they wanted. They've pushed back on a few things, but in general Ikea has all of the leverage.
A councilman saying "the rules were made to be broken" is going to come back to bite them.
In this case, it does make sense, IKEA is not going to change their branding to set up shop anywhere....and that area is fully commercial and fairly hidden from street view anyway.
A co-worker from out of state was here last week and said "everything is hidden behind pine trees around here"... i said yup, that's by design.

I agree. It sets up for a slippery slope that's all.
