I'd be willing to be this will have some impact...

It has signficantly more black folk than any of the other fast-growing towns except for Knightdale.
That was exactly my point. Garner is pretty much 60-40 between whites and minorities... no idea where the "conservative confederate flag waving remember the south" label comes from. After living here for two decades it certainly isn't in Garner.

Growth was impacted by the I540 "red route" fiasco. It's very simple.

No question it will be a game changer. For JoCo as well. ...that is unless they price the toll too high. Then it will be a non-starter like many of the toll areas of I540.

Any guesses on the cost of going from 540 @ Davis Drive to 540 and 40? $20? $40?

Isnt it more than $6 now from Davis to the current termination at Holly Springs? I may be wrong on the pricing...

Edit: It's $5 now. Eyeballing distance of new stretch maybe around $12 - $15 total?

Wow had no idea. So that $6 a trip x 2 trips a day x 5 days a week = $120 a week?! Is that correct?! If so then no wonder no one uses it!

You're math is a little off - it would be $60 RT from RTP and 55 @ Holly Springs, but that's sort of what Im trying to understand. Would 540 really do much for opening up Garner to more demand? Who would pay $150 week to drive RT between RTP and Garner? Assuming $15 one-way with 2 trips a day and 5 days a week.

If you are making $100k/year at a job in RTP, $150/week may not be as big of a deal as it would to someone who is making minimum wage. The toll is a tax that seems to impact people with lesser means more.

lol no... that's some funky math you have there.

Also if you really think nobody uses it I suggest you delve into the traffic count reports on the NCDOT website which show ridership has been increasing at a fast clip ever since it opened.

I have no idea where ya'll are making up these numbers but a trip from NC-147 @ I-40 to the end of the current toll road at NC-55 is $3.25 for a two axle vehicle with a QuickPass. So two trips per day for five days would be just $32.50.

Some anecdotal evidence, which I know people love here:

When we did our main discovery trip 3 years ago, I rode 540 at 8:30am from Apex at rt 1, to Cisco at RTP. I remember taking pictures because I couldn't believe how few cars were on there during rush hour.

Yesterday I hopped on 540 during rush hour for the first time in two years or so, and couldn't believe the difference. Much much more volume.
