But Yes, to fun stuff to do while scouting possible relocation options, but I would NEVER suggest anyone come to the Triangle (or Charlotte, or the Triad) on vacation. People vacation at the beach and the mountains in NC, as it should be. Those are gorgeous locations with loads of fun stuff to do for everyone. I would plan the vacation portion of your trip in one of those areas and leave the relocation scouting to a couple of days.
If by "vacation" the OP means "scout the area while doing some fun, summer stuff" then I think they could vacation here and have a good time.
If by "vacation" they are thinking of major theme/water parks, major attractions, monuments, and the like?
Nope. Not a good vacation spot.

Check out Boone/Blowing Rock for a few days to get a taste of what can be fun little vacations. You'll have plenty of time to explore the immediate area once you move here.
Jordan Lake is very nice...beach area with playground, some hiking trails. you could take a picnic and stay the day. Six bucks for the carload per day. Tons of camping also if you're into that.
I am unsure about the water park in Southern Cary that Twingles mentioned. Where is that?

Probably talking about the splash pad at Jack Smith park?
If your idea of vacation is shopping centers and grocery stores that all look alike then Cary is a great vacation destination. But I'd suggest instead checking out downtown raleigh/museums/marbles/pullen park, downtown Durham/bulls game/duke gardens, and chapel hill/Franklin st/carborro.
Thank you everyone for all of the suggestions! We took bits of advice from several people on this thread. We ended up staying 3 days in the Cary/Apex area, and then headed over to Wilmington, NC to take a break from speaking with realtors and mortgage people. The kids really enjoyed Marbles Museum in Raleigh. In the Wilmington area, we hit Wrightsville Beach a bunch of times, did plenty of swimming at the hotel pool, and spent time relaxing in the hot tub. Our choice for hotels was Homewood Suites by Hilton in BOTH areas, and I must say we were very pleased with our stay at each. The rooms were really nice. They also give complimentary beer, wine, and food during weekdays (except Friday) for their "social hour," which was a nice plus. On the last day before heading home, we drove to the aquarium at Forth Fisher, which was a lot of fun and a great way to wrap up our vacation since it rained that day. The drive home was a nightmare to say the least. It took us 14 hours to get back to Long Island from Wilmington!
I wouldn't necessarily recommend this style of vacationing to someone, but sometimes it's the only option you have to check out new places you're interested in possibly relocating to. Anyway, thanks again for the help!
