Yesterday I went into a Rite Aid store in Raleigh and saw a sign that Walgreens is taking over. Last year the federal government finally allowed Walgreens to purchase about half of the Rite Aid stores, including almost all the Rite Aids in North Carolina. (Walgreens had tried to buy all of Rite Aid in 2015, but the deal was blocked by anti-trust concerns.)
For some of the Rite Aid stores in the Triangle that Walgreens keeps open, this will be the second rebranding. In 2007 Rite Aid purchased about half of Eckerd stores, including most Eckerds in North Carolina. Rite Aid corporate has had financial problems ever since. Of course, Rite Aid has opened new stores since then... some of them across the street from Walgreens. It reminds me of the disruptions when Wachovia bought First Union.
Old-timers in the Triangle will remember Kerr Drugs, a North Carolina chain founded in Raleigh. JCPenney bought Kerr in 1995. The next year, JCPenney bought Eckerd -- but as part of the deal, JCPenney was forced to unload some of the Kerr stores. Those remained under the Kerr brand until Walgreens bought them in 2013.
The Rite Aid stores in South Carolina in direct competition with Walgreen's stores closed in June. The affected stores in North Carolina should be closing this month.

I seen a Pharmacy Closing sign on the Rite-Aid at Guess and Horton in Durham, so I know that one is going. I didn’t check the location at NC 54/NC 751 but I wouldn’t be surprised if that one was closing as well.
The locations on Fayetteville and NC 98 in Durham I’m kind of iffy about.
Anyone know what is to become of the Rite Aid that was built at the corner of Millbrook and Capital? All of the shelving is in place, but they never opened.
I didn't know about Rite-Aid closing until today when I happened to go to the Rite-Aid in Durham on Hwy 54 and 751. It was a sad shopping day going there and then to the Kroger on Hwy 54 that will be closing, they say, on Aug. 14th. Going to Kroger today wasn't a surprise because I already knew about it. But today at Kroger even more shelves were nearly empty.
I wonder what will move into the present Rite-Aid because there is already a Walgreen's in the shopping center right across the street from it. And then another Walgreen's on Fayetteville St. in Durham.
Fair to say that a lot of retail square footage is about to be dumped on the market. Could take years for the excess to be absorbed; the newer stores are too large for independent retailers.
Will be interesting to see if any Walgreens is closed in favor of a nearby Rite Aid. When two of them are adjacent, the apparent trend is to close the Rite Aid.
