Have you considered living in Morrisville? That is where I would live if I worked there. Cary is also a possibility for you that wouldn't leave you with a long commute.
Since you don't have to worry about schools yet, just rent anywhere close to work. Explore the area for a year and figure out where you want to end up.
Depends on what you're into. Shopping (What kind?) Sports or Outdoors (What activtiies?) Nightlife (What sort of scene?) Activities for the kid (Parks? Swimming? Classes?) Mostly stay in and watch TV/play video games? Are you the type who *has* to be close to a Whole Foods/Trader Joes/Costco/whatever? Do want a single family home, townhome, apartment, do you prefer suburban, urban, or rural? What is your budget.... Tell us a bit about yourself and we'll be able to help you better.
Morrisville is a great central location but the traffic in certain directions at rush hour can be stifling.
Start off living and renting close to where you would work. There are plenty of great, but generic, options near Morrisville and West Cary for rental. Give good thought as to what you want for your kids in terms of schools, good thought in what you want in terms of neighborhoods, and what you really want to endure in commutes, and place all that within your budget constraints. This area can be eclectic. Then, after some time, plant your flag where you want to be. The community is here to help provide input into the best decisions you can make. If you are coming from Austin, the Bay Area or Seattle, there is a perfect place to land here in the Triangle. Welcome.
