This update in the Herald-Sun offers basically the same info I've heard about progress on the East End Connector (the nearly 4-mile highway being built between NC 147 a/k/a the Durham Freeway and US 70 that will become part of I-885 when finished) except the following:

"The three roundabouts will be part of a new interchange off of U.S. 70, said Cameron Richards, the NCDOT engineer. They will connect U.S. 70 with South Miami Boulevard and East End Avenue, which had previously connected with U.S. 70 before construction began."

Anybody familiar with the project know how these roundabouts will work on the highway? Just curious to know in advance of the highway's opening in 2019 (hopefully).

Not a whole lot of info on that article about the location of the roundabouts but I'm guessing they probably wouldn't be on the highway but at the terminus of the exit ramps on the other roads (South Miami Boulevard and East End Avenue).

(TrafficSys would know more about this)

You guess right. It should also be noted that NCDOT still has to request approval for the I-885 designation from AASHTO and FHWA. According to AASHTO’s website, they have not yet done so.

Here's the project map PDF showing the three roundabouts.

https://www.ncdot.gov/projects/east-...ProjectMap.pdf

Wording in that article is a little unclear, but obviously you wouldn't have roundabouts on the freeway/interstate itself.

Normally freeway construction cuts off connectivity between minor roads. This project looks like it's doing the exact opposite.

On I-73 or I-74 south of Greensboro and north of Asheboro, there is an exit with a Hardee's and at least one traffic circle to get to it. Two if you miss the turn off for the Hardee's take the wrong road you have to circle around a different traffic circle to get back to where you started. Learned this one the hard way.

You can see the beginning of one in Google Maps (turn 3D off to view the latest imagery [acquired 2/8/2018]).

You have to squint at the PDF above, but you can find the three roundabouts.

They all serve US-70 at Carr Rd: The
1st serves entering/leaving US-70 (northbound lanes), going to/from Carr Rd, and the
2nd serves entering/leaving US-70 (southbound lanes) going to/from Carr Rd, and the
3rd serves Carr Rd as an interchange with Miami Blvd / US-70 Bus (independent of US-70)

None of these are on US-70 actual.
