A few days ago I read an article from getoffline highlighting a new cocktail bar in Oakwood. I wondered if Brewerks had gone bust, since it's location tends to be challenging. Turns out that Fig is located at 1000 Brookside. Can I now call random places inside the beltline, Oakwood?

Regards,
Resident of Oakwood East

Well, I don't get rattled until someone says "Historic Oakwood."

LOL. I remember what Oakwood was like in the 60's...mostly "liquor houses" and boarding houses. You wouldn't be caught dead there after dark. Nobody dared go trick or treating in Oakwood. I remember one day sometime later somebody "fixed up" one of those old houses. The rest was history all right

It was the very real threat of a major urban renewal highway project that spurred the “saving” of Oakwood. Historic status was granted and the rest is history. The neighborhood would have been bulldozed and paved over without question. This was early 70’s.

I got into some real nasty rooming houses with folks looking for projects.

There was a big one that the two story back addition was eaten up by termites so badly, the exterior walls slid and collapsed off the outside of the foundation.

You gotta have a lot of house love, sense of time and history, and an admirable purse to tackle those projects.

Are you referring to me? I'm not sure where you live, but it seems to me that you are free to call your neighborhood Oakwood as well. I guess we'd all be snobs then.

I don't live in Oakwood and have no particular opinion on it's residents. What I find amusing is this attempt to call this business an Oakwood establishment when its closer to Mordecai!

I guess there is still a stigma associated to E. Raleigh and no one has ever heard of Capital Heights. It's easier to call it Oakwood.

Capitol Heights stands on its own.

But, everyone wants to glom onto a successful brand.

Heck, go over to Belvidere Park and visit quaint Oakwood North, by Historic Builder KB Homes.

Haha! Hence my usage of Oakwood East. This is the development I had in mind.

Yeah. I got a good snort out of that one.

Total disconnect on a few levels. Beginning with non-contiguous geography.
