It's RTP. There is no need for an added "the" east of the Mississippi. Once you go west, they put it on everything. The I-5, The I-10, etc...
Some friends and I, have been jokingly referring to local roads as "the 540" lately. I'd never call them that otherwise. Sounds ridiculous.

It's probably those people from "The Ohio State University".

I'm going out to dinner tonight. Think I might drive into town on 'the Glennwood', or should I take 'the Wade' into town?

Depending what station you heard the traffic report on, the person may be sitting in a studio hundreds of miles away looking at traffic maps and cameras and has no clue what is the local venacular.

Mix 101.5 has a local person and so does 680 WPTF. The other Curtis Media Group stations probably use the WPTF reporter.

The traffic reporter heard on the iHeart stations (93.9, 105.1, 106.1, 100.7, 95.3) is not local.

But since Research Triangle Park (or "the Research Triangle Park") is none of those things ...

Wasn't there a similar debate a few years ago regarding "Falls of Neuse" vs. "Falls of the Neuse"?

Referencing RTP as "the park" makes sense in a certain context, "the RTP" doesn't.

Well, actually I heard it on WCHL. Can't get much more local than that. I think I also heard it on That Station 97.5. I could give them a pass since they're new, but the WCHL folks are born and bred Tar Heels.
