The proposed widening of the road from two to four lanes from Woodcroft Parkway to Barbee Road (approximately 1.4 miles) will be the topic of discussion at Berea Baptist Church at 5011 Fayetteville Road Dec. 6 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The planned widening will include a median with bicycle and pedestrian accommodation.

This is the only section of the road north of I-40 that is not more than three lanes wide. Durham is underway with a separate project to widen Fayetteville Road to four lanes north of Barbee Road.

That stretch of Fayetteville Rd. needed to be widened years ago; That section is very congested and for some reason they want to keep adding Traffic Signals.

ALSO @OP

NCDOT needs to widen the section in front of NCCU as well. It may be three lanes, but the center lane is very tight in some places.

There is a meeting tonight at South Regional Library about a sidewalk project on the south side of 54 between Alston (library) and 55.

Next Tuesday at South Regional is a meeting about Carpenter-Fletcher Road improvements.

NCDOT is busy in Durham. About time.

The section from Woodcroft to MLK was included in the original project that widened from 54 to Woodcroft, but funding (from the City) fell through. (Early 2000s.)

NCCU will not approve a widening though campus because of pedestrian concerns.
