Nah, registering the car isn't as bad as the license DMV.

You need your original title. They're going to take it and re-titled the car in NC.

Think you got most of it. Just did this a week or so ago to get NC title and license plates:

-NC driver's license

-Out of state title (sounds like no lien in your case)

-Proof of NC vehicle insurance

-$5 for notary fee

-Odometer reading - they use this to make sure your vehicle mileage makes sense as well as to calculate how much your car is worth for property tax purposes.

-A credit card or check to pay for vehicle use tax (3% of vehicle value or capped at $250) which is a one time fee. You will also need to pay for property tax on your vehicle. I'm not sure what the rate is, but my vehicle valued at ~$43k ran $500 or so.

-Anybody on the title needs to be present or you have to have some documentation proving that you have permission from the other title holder without their presence.

The registration is good for one year and expires on the last day of the same month a year from now. You do not need to get an inspection this go round and the vehicle does not need to be present. Also the NC title gets mailed out in a few weeks.

Make sure you go to an NC license plate agency and not the DMV. Unlike the DMV, the license plate agency does not do appointments but there's also much less of a wait, it's basically walk in.

Car still has a few payments left Toyota sent me a copy of the title it has my old address from New Jersey on it. Do you need a copy of the title with my new address on it or will what I currently have suffice?

Just bring a copy of the title if there is still a lien, NC DMV will work with NJ to get the car titled in NC. Hold that lien release when you get it.
