We are getting a new car that is much more expensive than the car we are trading in. The old cars registration expires in end of Oct 2018 and the dealer told me to go ahead and renew that to Oct 2019 and then when we transfer the tags to the new car, I will not pay the vehicle renewal/tax until Oct 2019. Does this sound correct?

Yep. I just bought a new car a few weeks ago and did this same exact thing.

I'm so happy this question popped up...I purchased a new car over the weekend. The car I traded in had a registration that expires at the end of this month. They transferred the tags, and said to renew online. Only thing is that the car I traded in needed an inspection. The DMV won't let me renew without the inspection, will they? Any advise is much appreciated!

Yeah, you can’t renew your registration without an inspection.

Hey spenbro, bring the car back to where you purchased and asked to renew the inspection sticker.

This is no Joke. I bought a car a few months back just about 2 months shy of the inspection due on the old car. The new car taxes were $300+ more this year than the old car. NC does not cap vehicle taxes like some other states. If you go from a $15k car to a $60k car, you'll be paying 4x's as much in vehicle taxes each year and NC does not depreciate the car on a yearly basis as much as it depreciates in reality.

My car is 23 years old I paid almost $100 to renew this year, my wife's car is eight years old and was $160. Not a huge difference for a $7000 difference in real value.

Years ago I paid $40 a year to renew that same old (but less old) car in FL, a byproduct of having so many tourists pay rental car fees...

Someone who has a $60k car can easily afford the fees vs a lower income person. Probably why I see so many 2-3 year out of registration cars in my neighborhood. I definitely support progressive tax structures.

Because someone can afford something then they should not question it? I could afford to buy my whole building lunch today, but hopefully, my boss doesn't make me. Better yet, she makes more money than me, so she should be mandated to buy us all lunch.

Car taxes should be capped at a certain value as they are in Virginia. My car doesn't create more wear and tear on the roads than anyone else's car. Why should someone have to pay 4 x's as much in that situation?
