It only takes a bit to rewatch some game or movie that was recorded. Is live really that important?
As for for natural disasters, it only takes a second for a life to be lost. On this planet for you humans, there is no rewind. There are people wanting to watch as much as they can to follow up with family/friends who are, all of the sudden, finding themselves with a storm that originally was going a different path.
I lived in blizzards and hurricane all my lives up in Boston. As much as I have issues with everything needing to have online access to do things, I agree access to 24/7 coverage is important to countless people especially when they have people they know in danger, and when they have a blessed heart of compassion God gave them to care enough to watch and pray for victims.
As for nonstop TV coverage across multiple networks, if someone can sit there 12 to 18+ hrs a day and watch the coverage, waiting to be alerted to something, then bully to them. I couldn't do it. It is very much about competition for ratings, audience numbers, advertising $$$. TV stations have more competition than ever with all the various cable channels in existence. Media is a cutthroat business and if a station wants to compete then they have to meet or beat their other competitors.
If an alert impacts my specific area and is something I need to take action on, I want the alert to come through, which it would, on my phone. There are also specific devices that will sound alarms for an emergency (no cell phone needed). Technology has made it so we can get alerted without having to depend on TV reception/coverage, broadband being operational or even electricity working. That's the good news.
As for entertainment options, there's usually (though not always) a way to see an event if it's being broadcast. Someone has it, be it streaming online, showing on a special sports feed in a bar...something/somewhere. Some creative problem solving can often net a solution.
