Hi, I am a North Carolina native and contemplating moving back to the Triangle area from Washington, D.C. I especially like Sunset Ridge in Holly Springs, and also Cary. Having lived most of my adult life in cities, that is not really so important to me anymore day to day, and I can make frequent trips to D.C. and New York for the cultural fix. Really looking for a safe, pleasant home and community, near family and old friends in the area. As an older, single gay man though I wonder just how comfortable these areas will be. I know times have changed a great deal. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

What do your family and old friends in this area think? I think they would be a great resource for you, no?

In pretty much all of NC in or near a major city you'll find a live and let live attitude as long as you have that same attitude and don't push your sexuality on others (and that would be true regardless of one's sexuality).

My family and friends are encouraging, though most are not as familiar with Holly Springs and Cary specifically.

You'll be fine. Being gay doesn't make you special here like it does elsewhere.

Have you looked at Carrboro? or downtown Raleigh/Downtown? They're better for all singles of various backgrounds and ages

if you live in a family neighborhood in Cary or HS, just be prepared for kids and bikes and school buses and more kids and more bikes and that sort of thing. If you are great with that and want to just be a nice neighbor with no kids, you'll be fine. But if that stuff starts to bother you, then I'd seek something either closer to a downtown area or near a university. Nothing really to do with your sexuality, though. I really don't think people care, and you may find that suburbanites will be thrilled to say they have a gay friend. Clear your social calendar!

It’s a mixed bag. Cary in particular is a mix of southern, northeastern, and international cultures, each with unique attitudes toward LGBT issues. Mostly, everyone here lives and let’s live, keeping judgments to themselves.

What sort of things are important to you in a gay friendly community?

I live in Sunset Oaks, which is right near ridge. It's mostly a very accepting of different culture type as far as I can tell. But as another poster said, TONS of kids/families and things that go with that in any of the sunset neighborhoods. A very nice pool system though!
