Use the local police station, many have specific monitored areas in the parking lots for these transactions. Person doesn't want to meet you in the the police lot? Move on.

Wow!! I was wondering what the background of that shooting was. You would think Costco would be a decent place for a transaction with all the people there especially in broad daylight.

I finally just decided to allow people to do porch pickup on the honor system and so far haven't been burned (over 2 years now). If it is anything over $60ish I usually will have my 6'7" 300lb hubby meet them outside. But now I am going to reconsider that. But I always check them out online before making any type of arrangement.

That's sad. I now only sell stuff on Nextdoor since everyone is accountable and know what neighborhood everyone lives in. I know I'm skipping a HUGE buyer base but with stories like this, I could care less. I have 15,000 neighbors in 64 neighborhoods, so not bad.

You rule out a lot flakes, though - some people on CL and that ilk just like to yank your chain with no plans to follow through. On next door you know exactly who it is and where they live.

Just donate all your junk and crap, instead of selling to some schmo online

That used to be a good alternative, but not anymore for many with the standard deduction change. Also it's not like everyone is selling crap.

Honestly, it's usually pretty obvious who you should and shouldn't be meeting up with. Google the name, the phone number, the email, look them up on Facebook, LinkedIN, etc, and you'll probably get a good ideal of who the person is. If there's any question, just don't meet up, or meet at the police station or whatever.

That being said, it's pretty unfortunate that you can get shot in a Costco parking lot around here in broad daylight making a LetGo transaction. And before someone says "it happens everywhere", no....it doesn't.

Yeah, that's too bad - this guy was probably thinking that he doesn't need to do this transaction on a police station property because Costco is always so busy and tons of people around.

I will only transact at the local police department. They have 2 swap/sale parking spaces setup in front that are monitored. Honest people buying appreciate knowing they'll be protected as well.

Ummm... would you be willing to lend or rent him out for the purpose of looking big and menacing for such transactions?
