I was told to ask about this information since it could greatly affect chances of owning a house and standard of living. I am a recent grad and do not know what things are important to research in an area before making the plunge.

How are:

State taxes rates
Car insurance
House insurance
Property taxes

Your question is too vague.

For example, car insurance rates depend on your car (age, make, model, etc), you (age, sex, tickets, accidents? etc), how far do you commute to work each day, where you live (city, rural, suburban, etc). You'd do better to call some local car insurance agents to get quotes.

Same goes for house insurance.

Property taxes depend on the city and county that you live in. Property tax rates for the various cities in the area have been discussed numerous times on this forum. Please use the "Search" feature to locate a few of these old posts.

Same goes for state tax rate

It's obviously relative to what you're used to. I will say that NC falls in the middle of states in terms of the tax burden on its residents. Our income tax is pretty high. We've lived in IL, FL and VA and NC has the highest income tax of the four. Property insurance seems reasonable to me. We pay about $200/year per $100,000 of insurance, but obviously that depends on lots of factors. Property taxes are reasonable although Wake County just reassessed and they are supposed to lower rates to counter the higher assessments, so I have no idea what our taxes will be this year. Car insurance rates seem reasonable to me. We also have a personal property tax on cars (about 1% per year). Sales tax is 6.75% which I find a bit high.
