We really could have done it this weekend but we were busy with other errands. We're looking at the temps for this week and some nights are down in the 30's. Have you winterized your sprinkler system yet? We will probably do ours mid-week but we need to find a day when we can be home before sunset.
Did mine last week. I remove some water with a clear plastic hose (use it like dipping a straw in your Dr. pepper) where BF connects but never have I blown my lines out in all the time I've lived here.

Reason: grammar!
We do get stretches of pretty cold temperature. Last year we set a new record of just of consecutive hours of freezing, under 7 days (158 hours or 6.6 days).
The official frost line in Raleigh is 12", so any piping above that should be drained, (unless you do the neat light bulb trick mentioned above - just don't use a CFD bulb!).
At my old house, had some damage to the backflow device under a foam rock due to freezing (wasnt running a light bulb). Was able to patch the crack with jb weld, but ever since that removed it and kept inside. Current house doesnt have irrigation so no issues. I know frost line is 12" but I havent heard many cases of irrigation pipes freezing (and i would expect them to be closer to surface than 12" at the point where the sprinkler head pops up.
