Can anyone suggest a non-highway drive from RDU to Albemarle/Norwood? Maybe some scenic roads or roads that are not too busy or hectic?

thanks....

Take highway 64 to highway 49 to highway 52.

Nothing that great to see between RDU and Asheboro except cute farm houses on rolling Piedmont hills and cute small southern NC towns like Siler City, Ramseur. After Asheboro most of the way down highway 49 of area you will be traveling on you will get to see the Uwharrie Mountains, Badin Lake, Mount Morrow Mountain, and Lake Tillery.

There is a more southern route down highway 501 to highway 27 but I never been that direction so I dont know what you will be viewing.

My husband has been making this trip for 30 years. We take US 1 South (from RDU take 40 East to get to US1 South) toward Sanford. Just past Sanford, take 15-501 South to Carthage. Go through Carthage on 24-27 (15-501 splits off to the left toward Pinehurst). 24-27 goes to Albemarle.

To get to Norwood, take a left onto 109 just past Troy, then a right on 731. This takes you to 52 where turning right will take you to Norwood.

You'll definitely see countryside this way and it's a 2 hour drive once you get on 1.
