Can someone recommend a really nice kennel in Chapel Hill or surrounding area? Something where the dog does not just sit in its cage 24/7 and where the dogs get some attention?
There is one in Durham (on the Hwy 70 side), closer to Chapel Hill. I can't recall the name of it, but it's a day and overnight "camp". They have playtimes for dogs with other dogs, and also with people. The dogs actually have to "visit" to play for 1/2 day b/f you can just leave your pet over night to make sure they will acclimate well ("play nice with others"?).
I just recently used the boarding at New Hope Animal hospital... it's just past the walmart heading towards durham. My dog seemed happier there and much less traumatized than at other places. She also smelled ok when I picked her up which is a big sign that they clean and have good bedding. They have a big yard for them to run around in out back as well.
There are disadvantages to places that allow "play time" such as insufficient monitoring and managing of individuals out at play, incorrect pairing of individuals, even after a trial and meet period prior to active play time off-leash, BUT places to try include:
Sunny Acres (off Hwy 70/Hillsborough Rd., Durham), Camp Bow Wow off MLK Blvd in Chapel Hill, Paws and Claws (W. Durham, down Guess Rd a long distance! but great folks), Bed and Bone in Mebane. If you have an older dog, a young puppy, or other individual who may have trouble holding their urine overnight or when in the excitement of a packed kennel, you may want to pay for extra walks and a bath, and ask to be realistically updated if they have problems going potty in their cage/run.
If you can't just walk in to a facility, ask for a tour then and there, and be given one, don't be decieved that because your dog comes home clean and not covered in urine/mud that he/she was well-treated in a top-notch facility. Be concerned re: what they want to hide and don't want you to see if they only have certain "tour hours" or none at all, ask specifically where dogs are walked and how often and how long and pay more for longer walks if necessary. Ask if they provide any soft bedding, especially for older/ill dogs and cats. If they don't, ask if you can provide some, and take items that are easily cleaned so they can wash them as needed! NO big bulky beds!
Many places clean periodically instead of multiple times a day, as they should, and don't hire experienced animal care professionals, who can note signs of distress or discomfort or depression and troubleshoot accordingly.
Look for places that have ADULTS supervising your pets, and always leave details as to health problem history, veterinary contacts, medications, behavioral problems (be honest to avoid problems/injuries!), and your contact or in your place, an emergency contact!
We have used Creature Comforts Inn in Durham, and its not far from Chapel Hill. We bring out cats there, but the dog facility looked nice as well. There is also a full vet next door which is nice in case something ever was to happen.
