Can a student currently in private or charter school apply for a magnet school for next school year? For example, a student is currently at 5th grade in a charter or private school. Can he or she apply for a magnet middle school for next year? I could not find a definite answer from WCPSS website. Thanks so much!

Yes, but you have to register with WCPSS first.

Yes. Although I think it’s harder to get in, because they give priority to siblings and kids who are already in magnet programs.

I just attended the magnet fair and the woman at Hunter told me that you basically have no chance to go to Ligon Middle if you don’t get into a GT magnet in Kindergarten.

So you can register with WCPSS while at private or charter school. You don’t have to pull the kid from private or charter to public basic school before applying marnage school, correct?

Really? We don’t have Ligon as magnet choice. But probably Carnage is the same.

It doesn’t hurt to apply, but she said most seats are filled with kids from other GT elementary schools. She said it would be unlikely for you to get in even if you were a magnet student at another school.

The priority for most schools is

1. Siblings
2. Magnet students following the same theme
3. Magnet students looking to change themes
4. Base students at a magnet school following the same theme

The rest is priority based on socioeconomic mix.

Check out this link to see where you fall. https://www.wcpss.net/priorities

Here is a chart of which magnet schools feed into each other. https://www.wcpss.net/cms/lib/NC0191...20Dec%2017.pdf

I didn’t realize how hard it is to get in the magnet school. Thank you so much for the info!
