We just received our tax preparers bill for having our taxes done......$675! I about croaked!! Isn't this a bit much? We've moved a lot and had our taxes done professionally before but this is the most we have ever paid. Our taxes are pretty straight forward, we are strictly middle income and only used a CPA because of the move to NC last year.....

I'd be interested what everyone thinks....

We pay 515.00 total for our personal taxes and our LLC. I think 675.00 is very high for a straight foward tax return.

We had them done here for the first time last year because we did not feel comfortable with all the ends and outs of a corporate move and NC laws. We were shocked at the over $500 bill. In CA we never paid over $250. but had begun to do them online there with little trouble. This year we did them ourselves online here and it was no trouble. We have had our refund for over a month directly deposited into our accounts.

A few years back, I switched from using a CPA to Turbo Tax. So far, we are pretty happy with it. If you are an account holder of some mutual funds susch as Vanguard, Fidelity, etc., it gives you a sizable discount. With what I am paying now, it will take me years of tax return by the time I reach what you pay in one year.

I would be curious how much of that $675 was for calculating part-year taxes for two states. I did ours for Pennyslvania and NC and it was a pain.

Wow! That does seem high! When we moved here 2 years ago, we also had to deal with 2 state's taxes. Our's was straight-forward too and we paid $90. This year we paid $60.

Ours are fairly complicated. We use an old line firm and pay $650 which also includes free advice throughout the year.

I have been using James Ogburn, CPA, on Six Forks Rd in North Raleigh for many years. I highly recommend him and he charges around $250.
