Just started this past weekend. Had a Winter check 5 weeks ago supposedly all was well.
This weekend the first cold nights of the year the temp in the house would not go above 70. This with the thermostats set up to 78. Never went below 69 on the thermostats but would not go higher than 70.
Yesterday afternoon with the warmup the thermostats seemed to return to normal reaching the set temperature. With the cold night the problem has returned. Anyone have any recommendations for a good heating guy in the Durham area?
Presuming you have a heat pump based HVAC, if your thermostat(s) has a "emergency heat" mode setting you may want to try it tonight. IIRC, it configures your heat pump to use the heat strips primarily (which, yes, is expensive). If there's no improvement, it may indicate a problem with the strips, which the HVAC will use from time to time, even in "normal" heating mode.
Even my 14 year old heat pumps had no issues heating or cooling my house in normal mode (ie not in emergency heating mode). When your heat pump is running for a while go outside and see if it's all iced up. If it is, there could be several issues - some are cheap and some are expensive.
Another way is to use a laser thermometer (cheap at Harbor Freight) or meat thermometer and after 20 mins or so of run time measure the temp of the duct the air comes out and the input air temp at the place your system pulls air from. It should be at least a 15* difference and preferably 20* even on cold nights - example my new heat pumps, outside air temp of around 28*, inside suction air temp 70*, output air 102*.
Warmer night again. 40 degrees at 6 this morning thermostats 75 degrees with setting at 75. Santa Air coming today I hope he can find the problem with the damn thing running right with the warmer temps.
I hope they are able to get your issues resolved. A few questions:
- Is this your first hearing season living in the house?
- If not did you have issues last year? [To rule out a non-hvac equipment related issue - e.g. not enough insulation, etc. ]
- Why would anyone want their inside temperature to ever go above 70? :-)

Been here since 2014 no issues like this till now.
House is on a slab 9' ceilings. Garage is partially insulated 1/3 no sheet rock or insulation. When it gets down to 25 or so the house is plenty cold with thermostats set at 70.
If it's always been cold and won't keep up you either need more insulation or a higher BTU unit if it's functioning properly without any mechanical issues.
Edit just saw you said "no issues until now" so not sure. How is the air flow? Has the filter been changed?
