Cool, thanks to all for sharing your tips and experiences.
So it ended up being $1600 total to transfer 2 cars? Yikes!
To clarify - the $1,000 was for both cars - around 500 for each. Again, there was a one time $600 transfer fee - came out to about $300 per car - that made up the preponderance of that total. Bring a credit or debit card.

Just to be clear for others reading this thread, or who may come across it it the future, there is no "transfer fee" in NC. I assume you are referring to the 3% Highway Use Tax, which is charged every time a vehicle is re-titled. It is charged at 3% of the vehicles value, with a maximum of $250 for out of state vehicles titled in NC.

It is a one time fee - you are more familiar with the proper term. We were re-titling both cars - there was the one time fee and then the other charge which I know is paid each time you re-register, and is based on the car's value.
Also, you don't have to go to an office in your own city or county--if you're in the Triangle, the local offices are always the most crowded. If you ever find yourself in a neighboring county, or somewhere else in the state that's less congested, go to their office. Lines are much shorter, sometimes nonexistent.
With the "Real ID" being required for certain activities starting 2020, all license offices are going to be harder to get in and out of in the next couple of years.
Yes, Louisburg won't be crowded and is the drive is 25 minutes from the Capital Blvd. split.
