Wake Co expected a growth of 1900 students but only grew by 42 students this year, did somebody not count correctly? No worries about overcrowding schools!
The article mentions that charter school enrollment increased by 1532 during the same period. Combine that with demographics that aren't specific to Wake County, and it is what it is.
I don't see either of those factors changing anytime soon.
As for the apologetic assertions that we must keep spending bond money to alleviate overcrowding and to maintain schools, I'd like to see more explanation from the school board. The WCPSS spokesperson mentioned repairs to HVAC systems, but that's an ongoing expense. We shouldn't be borrowing money in the form of bonds to pay for ongoing repairs.
This is the other side of charter schools that people like to ignore. Yes, they siphon money off from district schools, but they also take an enormous capital expense load off of tax payers. They represent many schools we haven't had to build. And if you think they're going away, we're going to have to figure out how to build dozens of new schools first.
The schools are in bad shape so rather than build new they can address existing schools? Charter enrollment does not surprise anyone familiar with the area given the entitlement crowd that is Wake county.
The 2018 bond includes renovations for 11 schools, so they are certainly investing in existing facilities as well as building new.
Also, don't forget about the state K-3 class size law. WCPSS has to create an additional 400+ elementary classrooms over the next few years even if they don't add a single student.

Right - as well as the fact that we still have extremely overcrowded schools that need to be fixed.
I think a lot of the school renovations are increasing capacity. Plus, there are still a number of underenrolled schools in Wake County.
