As to the ability of State employees to live in Raleigh, the average wage paid by the State is $50,644. If that's the average, some of them make less. Given how many of them work in Raleigh, the average wage paid specifically to State employees who work in Wake County isn't likely to be much different. Median household income in Wake County was $77,318 as of last year.

Yes, there are some dual-income households where at least one of residents works for the State. A single person living in the city limits of Raleigh might find it easy enough to keep his/her head above water if he makes the average State wage, but not if he or she is in the lower half. A single parent with kids, it becomes very difficult.

It is perhaps true that money goes further in, say, Roxboro. I don’t see how it follows the state should move departments to Roxboro. Wake County is not Manhattan.

I think it's a dumb idea to move the DMV out of the capital city. There are so many other better choices than Rocky Mount...which does seem like a joke as others have said.

The state will not only be saving money on rent but they will also be able to save money on salaries. A good portion of people will not make the drive or relocate leaving the state with the ability to hire at a lower pay rate. It is a win win for the state and Rocky Mount.

If that line of reasoning was true, then Rocky Mount, and other low cost cities would be awash with employers. The fact that employers aren't rushing to places like RM disprove that as a viable business plan.

It is not as if we are talking about a tech firm that needs talent. This is the DMV where the majority of employees are job trained, not college educated. Kind of like why Rooms To Go has their distribution center in Dunn.

DMV headquarters operation is nothing like a distribution center. if you have data on the educational levels of DMV HQ staff, please provide it.

Unfortunately the state does not have a report on education levels of staff at the DMV. What you can look up is the DOT-DMV directory of Management from the commissioner on down and see that the number of employees on the list that would have college degrees. Those are the top jobs in the state for the DMV - there are a number of employees that work on the state level that are admin/customer service type jobs and do not require any post high school education.

All I am saying that is would be a benefit to the State and Rocky Mount to move the office of the DMV. Not that I agree with the move.
