Maybe I am older than other posters here. In fact I know that I am. My kids went through the amateur sports thing (soccer), applying to college thing (Wake Forest, Duke, Elon), parents spending $ 50 to $ 70 k per year on college plus $ 20 k per year on private high school.
It ain't worth it.
Looking back, we should have sent Junior to Wake Tech for 2 years, then a traditional college. Looking back, I realize that it's the parents pushing this stuff. No - we don't need $ 192 million dollar basketball courts. We need to focus on the important stuff, like improving local schools, affordable housing, health care etc.
*I*have no need for basketball or volleyball courts and we aren’t chasing athletic scholarships. That doesn’t change the fact that the need is there. Most kids around here are traveling to Winston Salem and Greensboro to play in basketball AAU tournaments. That’s kinda dumb. We could keep all that money local. But better to spend twenty years arguing about the parcel which is exactly what’s happening with a building in my old town - while it falls down and becomes impossible to rehab.
I can assure you that your hard won experience with youth athletics and the college process will fall on deaf ears. Everyone thinks it makes sense to pay thousands of dollars a year on youth sports in hopes of an athletic scholarship. Already know a few 2019 grads transferring from their scholarship schools. Big difference when you’re the BMOC on your HS campus and then you get to college and unless you’re going top tier no one cares you’re an athlete. Families around here pay almost $10k a year for club volleyball. Imagine if you invested that money in a college fund!
Wake has already allocated the money they’re going to contribute to this from the tax. They issued an RFP and will be awarding the money within weeks. Cary is the only applicant.
Error at Koka Booth was honoring the long time mayor, instead of selling naming rights.
I betcha there will be no problem getting sponsors for this sports complex.
Oh well, another taxpayer-subsidized thing like Koka Booth...that never really breaks even...?
Koka Booth has had a surplus three of the past four years.

Two different pots of money. The county put out separate RFPs for the sports facility and the "medium projects" that the others are vying for. Cary was the only one to submit for the sports facility.
