Are these fuzzy little soon-to-be-butterflies that are going to fill my yard with colors all Summer; or are they voracious little worms that are gonna kill my tree in a matter of weeks?! Help, they've taken over a tree in the back yard and I don't know whether to kill 'em or feed 'em!

they're harmless, other than eating some leaves off plants for a few weeks

What you see in the picture is about 5% of the mass! There are thousands of them on this one tree in my yard, freaked me out man.

LOL, yes they are caterpillars. They'll eat the heck out of your plants if you have anything nice and leafy planted though, so be glad they're on a tree!

I used to go out LOOKING for them when i was a kid! lol

In our old neighborhood, the streets would practically be covered with them on occasion.

my daughter loves it when she finds them too.

That's what concerns me.... my whole backyard is landscaped. Is it gonna be a barren desert next week? I know it sounds silly but this is my first house and the prior owners landscaped the heck out of the place and I'm still learning what animals are good and which are bad. So far I know that butterflies are good.

Chances are they are going to climb the tree and munch on the leaves up there for a while. Just keep an eye on your plants!

We called them "Tent Caterpillars". I've also heard them referred to as "Bag Worms". They will eat the leaves off your trees. My dad used to wrap an old T-shirt around a long pole, pour a bit of gasoline on it, and then burn the suckers. I preferred stepping on their hind ends and watching their heads pop off
