While I knew that the Durham-Orange Light Rail, like all public transit projects in the US, faced 100-fold more obstacles than the typical highway project, this week’s news has been tough to take.
Which leads me to wonder: how many of you like driving? Personally, I hate it—driving, or spending any time in a car, is always the worst part of my day. I love to bike, walk, take the bus, even fly, but driving always puts me in a bad mood. I get some of the cost- and logistic-based critique of the Durham/Orange light rail project, but if it happens (or even if we get intercity bus service with ten-minute headways) I could give up driving.
I suspect I’m an outlier on this front, but am curious nonetheless.
I love to drive most of the time. I don't enjoy bumper to bumper traffic, but I enjoy just driving around town sometimes listening to the radio or an audiobook.
I enjoy riding my bike or running when I’m just relaxing. I hate it if I’m trying to get anywhere. Public transport is fine in London or NY. I’ve never felt the desire in a place I wasn’t afraid to drive in.
I did 5 years cramped in a smelly packed subway car, and said never again. I don't like public transportation. I'm an introvert and enjoy my time alone listening to music in the car without 5 other sketchy people touching me. Self driving cars will be heaven.
Depends on the definition of "driving". Commuting in bumper to bumper traffic in the Triangle? No! Cruising along the Blue Ridge Parkway with little/no traffic on warm fall day with the top down? Yes!
I abhor driving with a passion due to a few bad accidents when I was young. The only amount I can deal with is my work commute each day. Our home is walkable to downtown though so most of the time it's wonderful to bike or walk after work or weekends. My better half doesn't mind driving us around the rest of the time and I love her for it.
If I could bike, walk, or take the train to my current office job I would all the time. Hopefully when spring hits I'll try bike commuting again up the ATT.
I love to drive! It's just as fun now as it was when I was a teenager in driver's ed!
