I have found that in the last 20 years real 'humor' has been replaced with sarcasm. I don't think its regional as much as generational now. People use deep biting negative sarcasm as their only humor device these days.
I found this much more common in the NE than it is here.
This is too hard to generalize, but I'll give you mine. For me, everyone in my neighborhood has a great sense of humor. At work, we talk about politics and man is it a WIDE range! From die hard Trump rally supporters to people who want free college/healthcare with super high taxes. They are all friends and frequently get together for drinks after work and making frequent political jokes without getting offended.
The area has grown in terms of entitlement and what was a laid back enjoyable place is quickly being replaced with brash scarcastic folks who have blinders on and do what they want. Area has sold out and better places than here in my opinion unless you like where’s the good pizza/bagel crowd along with all the Red Sox/ Pats shirts you see constantly. There was a place in Apex that was busted for Robert Kraft “opportunities†so yes this place has changed since you seen it last and lost all Southerness if that makes sense.
As you can easily tell if you spend any time on this board, there are a lot of people who live in Triangle who think they are funny, but actually are just the opposite. Not sure if that is the same as "have a good sense of humor".

Are you referring to the constant "jokes" about pizza and BBQ?!!
To answer the OP, as the Brits say, "how long is a piece of string?".
