This is going to be hard to describe in a post & suggests stereotypes that may offend some, but really my intention is to get a feel for the area in consideration of a possible move.

My family is thinking of moving back to the Triangle from the Pacific NW (WA state) because we miss living in a culture that feels laid back with people who are generously friendly and have a good sense of humor. Many people in the PNW are friendly and enlightened, educated, health oriented, environmentally aware, politically/socially liberal, and often involved in issues of social justice -- I love all of those things. I am able to wear comfortable shoes with no makeup to work. The flip side is that many are uptight and fail to laugh at themselves or see humor about their own culture. People "get their panties in a bunch" over small things. There is a lot of passive aggression. My Nordic mother says it feels very much like Scandinavian culture in the PNW. In contrast, many of the people we knew in NC (lived there for 30 years) seemed more colorful, open, interested in others, and able to tell a great story or anecdote with humor and share more boisterous laughter with random strangers. Sometimes it is dark or goofy humor, but like the NC sunshine, it's light and warm.

I just can't pinpoint the difference in feel between the two cultures but maybe someone else can understand what I'm trying to say.

My question -- is NC still the same place culturally that it was 20 years ago (referring to laid back humor), or has it changed dramatically due to transplants and time? Or am I only describing some of the "old" south?

I think attempting to ascribe specific personality traits to very large population groups based solely on anecdotal evidence is almost useless.

Anyway, many people think southerners are passive aggressive, for what thats worth. Also, you framed your question as ll of "North Carolina", while posting on the Triangle board and apparently looking to move to the Triangle. About half the residents of the Triangle are from a state other than NC.

I think that's impossible to answer. The country has changed so much over the past 20 years that I doubt any place is the same culturally.

I highly doubt any place in the country is the same culturally as it was 20 years ago.

This is all good input. Sounds like none of these descriptors stand out.

OK, this thread describes what I'm talking about! Hoping the Triangle hasn't lost humor in the last 10 years?

Agree. People these days wake up looking for their Outrage of the Day. It has nothing to do with geography. My sister just joined new social group last week and the other participants wouldn’t even say which neighborhood they live in. Not sure what that’s about but everyone seems paranoid these days.

this doesn't really answer your question but I notice a big difference from where I'm from originally and here humor-wise. I'm used to people joking back and forth with each other, lots of sarcasm. I don't find that quick banter here.
