Our son got selected in lottery to Woods charter school. He will be going to high school this year. We are in Chape hill but moving to West Cary soon as we just bought a house there. He is the assgned to the Green level high school. Woods charter school is about 15 miles from the new house. There is a bus service from woods charter but serves orange/chatham counties at certain public location where parents can drop off and pick up. We have been applying to Woods charter since he was in elementary school but as luck would have it he got selected when we are just moving away from Chapel Hill. What would you recommend? Is it worth the extra effort in terms of dropping/picking up (30 miles daily) over wake county high school ?
I'd pick the charter school if it can get you away from the MVP Math curriculum. The principal of GLHS is responsible for bringing this debacle of a curriculum to Green Hope and it will be the same at Green Level possibly with even less experienced teachers. I'm kicking myself for not sending my freshman to Gibbons and it's solely due to this math. 95% of the freshman class either failed last semester or is failing now, but WCPSS solution to the problem is to grade them all on a massive curve so they all passed (and will continue to pass). Learning math? Not so much. Karen Summers is a good principal but she's a "yes man" who volunteers to be first for anything the county wants to do.
