Ya wanna know who ALWAYS starts these conversations? The folks who declare themselves liberals.
Same with my family. Out of nowhere last night on family group chat it happened again. We were joking about prom and all of a sudden my sister throws out Jesus was a liberal...apropos of nothing. My other sister said "you always bring politics into it....have a nice night" and that was the end of the group chat.

I do find the political left Jesus was a liberal line uninformed.same Jesus also said you know marriage is between a man and a woman and you can never divorce but they leave that part
You'll find a lot more talk of religion in general in this area than you would up north. Only you know if that kind of talk will bug you (this includes "what church do you go to" in the "getting to know you" phase). It can be a little disconcerting if you're not used to it (note I'm not an atheist). But otherwise you should not have any issues if you can let that not bother you. I've never been proselytized or anything.
And it’s almost always “what church do you to?” or “what religion are you?”, never considering that you very well might be none at all. You can find yourself as an outcast in certain communities or at certain jobs if you don’t keep very quiet and “in the closet” about your lack of religion. Transplants probably experience this less than us natives, as they are more likely to be around more transplants.
As far as political leanings, like most areas, things track very much to population density
I definitely agree with the “Where do you go to church?” I also find that I’m definitely more in mixed company regarding politics, but I don’t care about censoring myself.
You'll see a lot of churches around here, and good luck getting a seat at a restaurant after 11 a.m. services let out. But I've lived here most of my life, and religion doesn't come up that often in the Triangle area. And when it does, more times than not it involves religious leaders favoring progressive causes.
As for liberals/non-conservatives and such, the fact that Democrats overwhelmingly occupy public office in the county and city boards should answer that question as well.

I had some good fun with this question. I got asked this a bunch of times upon moving here (from CA). I practice no organized religion or attend any church or temple and didn't want to start that conversation since there's always some who try to heavily recruit for their church.
So, having moved to the RDU area from northern CA, and wanting a cheeky response that I'd find amusing, when asked I would say, "Oh well in CA I attend the 'Church of the Redwoods' -- you know those huge trees? Well we celebrate and hug redwood trees."
The look I would receive in response to this was priceless, often with a subtle backing away and a muttering of "hmmm...that's nice...." I mean, you can't really criticize a tree. And thus would end the "church" discussion with no muss, no fuss.

Wish my family chats would end like that. Instead some insist on posting memes and emojis like they're teenagers on Instagram. I can't exit the chats or I'll catch wrath for that but can't stomach the dopey noise on my phone either.....
My Grandmother used to say it was never OK to bring up politics or religion in polite company. She reserved the very (questionably secular) Southern phrase “Bless your heart,” for those who did, or anyone who was generally trying to “Rouse the Rabble.” I find this to still be the case for most here in the Triangle in my experience.
Hey, I'm offended by you jokingly generalizing southern Trump supporters.
Just kidding! I'm able to recognize the humor in your statement and not have a complete meltdown just because your comment was not PC. Too bad we have so many liberals here who would lose their minds if a conservative made such a generalization about their type.
To answer the OPs question - yes we have plenty of non-believers and progressive types around here.
You made me laugh at that one!
