Hi All,

Does anyone have good experiences / recommendations / stories I can learn from?

I have been watching "Big Dreams Small Spaces" on Netflix and have a backyard I want to transform.

Our back yard has a slope that takes up more than a third of the distance from the back of the house to the back fence so it is not a simple flat slope. That being said, I think an experienced designer or architect may be able to help me turn the flaw into a feature and avoid pitfalls I may not know about (non-porous surface rules for town of Apex).

I have an appointment with The Garden Supply Company to come out and take a look but have been told by a neighbor that they primarily focus on plant selection for existing spaces and not really garden design for a yard as a whole.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Following...even an online one where you submit pics and questionnaire, geared toward a DIYer and smaller projects.

Default We created ponds

Whenever my family had a slope on the property and wanted it to look pretty we would turn it into a pond and waterfall.

Dig out a hole up top. Dig another one below that one, however far down the hill you want to go. Then dig a connecting stream of the depth, size, width, num of waterfalls you want and path you want.

Line the top pond, bottom pond and stream connector with a non-plant permeable material such as old carpet, cover with waterproof thin rubber from local garden stores. Add a pump with hose from bottom pond to top and voila.

Then you can add veggies or decorative plants all around the edges, some stone rock, gravel paths, water lilies, fish, bird houses etc. I've probably moved thousands of pounds of clay for these projects over the years haha.

This is becoming a hobby of mine, and if anyone wants to read more, I found a bunch of interesting stuff on the NCSU website: https://gardening.ces.ncsu.edu/landscape-design/

I just returned a book to the library called "Rain Gardening in the South" and it gave some really good information about creating a rain garden for areas that retain water from slopes and gutter downspouts. I might be doing this myself in a few months.

As far as planting on a slope, I saw on a tv show that ornamental grasses can be great for that because the root system prevents erosion. How steep of a slope is it?

Previous owners of the home we bought I think used T&T Landscaping out of Mebane.

They built the hell out of the backyard that became ours. I shared pics of it last year here on C-D.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but they did really good work here.

Wow.

I love paver patios but I really don't see many around here and definitely not to that degree. If my husband sees those pics (he lurks C-D) I'm in trouble because he wants an outdoor grilling station just like that!

Ya its sorta crazy.

My biggest problem at this point is keeping the Carpenter Bees off the Cedar Pergolas without killing them as they are pollinating beasts.

I'm going to have to look into that too, there's one specific area on the new house that they're hanging around. I don't really know what to do about that yet.
